Social, Local & Family History Group Update and Meeting Agenda

In conjunction with Canvey Thameside u3a group

Message from Paul Bancroft Meeting Convener

Hi everyone,

We continue to meet 4 weekly on Tuesdays from 10.00am in the Sandy Bay bar and restaurant. We start with tea and coffee and a natter before the talk and discussion. Georgia tells me drinks have gone up to £2.90 for coffee and £1.90 for tea. I know this is quite a rise, but it is the first rise since we started using the bar some time ago. Please adjust what you bring money wise as it is quite an awkward amount. I'll try to remember to bring loads of 10 pence pieces.

Please consider volunteering for a talk in the new year or give me topics you want me to cover, so we get a change from listening to me. I will put next year's dates up in autumn. Numbers are great at around 12, but everyone is still welcome to join us.

20th August: Me on the Basildon and District plotlands, particularly the Dunton Hills community. Selling land for "vacations" was a local feature and we looked at how this was tried on Canvey. The remains of the Dunton Hills community are still there.

17th Sept: Me as an introduction to what Sue is doing next time to provide a broader context on how education has changed and affected our lives and a great chance for you to tell us your experiences of what i am talking about. Themes will include the 11+, grammars and secondary moderns, what we were taught, exams, the slipper and cane, school milk, the nit nurse, innoculations, ROSLA and anything else that comes up.

15th Oct: Sue will be talking about the history of Canvey schools and her experiences.

12th Nov: Toys, pastimes, comics, hobbies, collecting,  parks and our childhood memories, 1940s-60s. I will start this off, particularly looking at what I remember, but a great chance to share memories and bring in anything you still have from the time, games, toys and the like.

10th Dec: Childhood Christmas and New Year. I will start this off, but another chance to tell us about your family and local traditions, as these vary across the country.

I hope to see you on the 20th.

Regards,

Paul, Convenor.
