Social, Local & Family History Group Update and Meeting Agenda

In conjunction with Canvey Thameside u3a group

Message from Paul Bancroft Meeting Convener

Hi everyone,

Welcome to you all and a reminder that anyone can attend these sessions from our U3A and Sandy Bay residents. We are on their activity list. Renewal of memberships for the U3A are now ongoing, but there are still vacancies for new members. Details on our U3A website.

We continue to meet 4 weekly at the Sandy Bay bar and restaurant on Tuesday from 10.00am (left car park after security). Members of the group are residents so we can use the facility as their guests. We start with drinks and a natter. Please bring the money needed for the drinks (the only cost) so I can pay at the end of the meeting. We are no longer doing help sessions as such, but please bring along anything you need help with and one of us will take it and have a look for you. You can also email anything you want me to look at. paulbancroft800@gmail.com

Our programme takes us into 2024, and I am always happy to have volunteers for talks. Please email me with any title and preferred slot from the dates available.

22nd August: Long Gone Canvey Industries 2: Prouts Catamarans, their meteoric rise and sad demise.

19th September: Georgia is talking about DNA and family tracing. Please bring along anything you have done on this. Hopefully, this may encourage us all to try this line of approach.

17th October: Graham Stevens has asked to do a talk on his family's first settlement on Canvey in the early 1900s, including a connection to William Wilberforce. He and Rod were regular speakers at the local history group meetings.

14th November: Wills. This was a suggestion from the group. I will do a general introduction on wills, including some classics. The best bit will be examples you bring along, so dig them out ready for the session.

12th December: Further details about life in 1921 based on the census and further research done on it recently.

9th January: Sue Sutton will be telling us about life, from her family research, at Bata in East Tilbury. We did a local history group visit to East Tilbury for a talk and tour, which i and others went on, so this should be a good follow-up.

Meetings follow on the 6th February, 5th March, 2nd April, 30th April and every 4 weeks.

Take care and I hope to see you at the next meeting.

Paul, convenor
